They got rid of the Yacht-Master II—at Watches and Wonders 2024—which historically was my least favorite modern Rolex. Although there were some cool characteristics, like being the only other Rolex Chronograph beside the Daytona, I could just never get into the Yacht-Master II. Does anyone have any gripe with the Yacht Master, or is it just not as popular as the classics? Personally I find the YM 1 to be the least attractive of all the Rolex sport models. The bezel is absolutely HIDEOUS imo. If you’ve been around Rolex circles for any serious amount of time, you’ll likely have heard that the Yacht-Master II is simply too large of a watch for Rolex to have made - And to be fair, it’s verybig by Rolex standards. In my opinion, the Yacht-Master has these things working against it: It's not a Sub. If Rolex had released a "Submariner" with a platinum bezel insert, rhodium dial, and electric blue seconds hand, people would have lost their minds over the watch and it would have a nickname (Bluesy, Smurf, Cookie Monster, Hulk, Kermit, etc.)
It truly baffles me why the current yacht master is not as popular some other models in the Rolex range. I personally think it’s a beautiful watch, specifically the version with the slate grey dial. Despite the niche appeal of the Yacht-Master II’s sailing-specific complication — or, perhaps because this appeal never became more widespread among Rolex fans in general — the Yacht-Master II was discontinued in 2024. You need to understand that many hate the Yacht Master I, so when Rolex releases a II and it’s markedly even more unattractive it immediately feels enthusiast venom. YM I is a Submariner in a dress. While the Yacht-Master II is a chronograph like the Daytona, its mechanics and construction differ significantly from a classic stopwatch function. Thanks to the patent granted in 2007, the technical principles behind the mechanism are visible to the public.
